Welcome to Styling Star: This Time For Real

As expected, Styling Star has completely taken over my life the last few days. I've got plenty to say about it, and you can expect lots of posts in the near future, but for now, I thought I'd just give you a quick introduction to my character.

Meet Alice.
I'm just gonna show you some of the looks she's been rocking so far.
Loving the new lolita stuff.
Clearly.
Still in love with this dress and all of its variations. Also, a fun little sidenote: some of the hair colors are named after characters that have them. My hair is 'Alina Blonde' in this pic :P
As I just said...
This koi dress is super cute, too. It's part of the sample outfit that Kanokoi gives you. I've also got on a pair of adorable riceball earrings, but you can't see them in this pic.
Just lots of lolita stuff...
Oh, hey! A bold outfit!
Another dress set that I'm really loving. Plus these hairbows! So glad that they made them adjustable in this one.
I keep going on about the dresses, but I think my favorite new things are actually these horned hoodies. So awesome! I want one of these IRL. This one's a little bright for my color palette, though, maybe one of the rock ones instead...

I'd also like to introduce you to my assistant.

My assistant, Hannah.
I unlocked the ability to change her clothes last night, so here she is, adorably manning the counter in her new duds.
And here's her profile card where you can see the full outfit.

And that's it for today! Now I'm going to go back to playing...

  1. Hiya! You might have seen me over at Marzipanini's. I decided to check out your blog too since I can't get enough of the game. I too have been playing like mad since Dec 25 and am enjoying every minute! It's also nice to meet another lolita enthusiast. :) I only have one dandy-style outfit in real life but sadly it never sees any use.

I love your tone and humour (and pretty pictures) so I'm looking forward to more posts from you!

    1. Aw, thank you! I'm glad that you enjoy my posts and I'm happy to hear that someone finds me funny aside from myself :P and yes, I do recognize you from Marzipanini's blog.

The game has definitely been great so far! Not that I expected otherwise. This IS my second favorite video game franchise, after all. First is Pokemon, of course. And yeah, I'm really into lolita fashion. I'd never wear any of it myself, but in a sense that's kinda WHY I like it so much. Er, if that makes any sense...that's kinda my stance on fashion in general, really. I'm into it, but I don't bother with it myself. That's why I like these games.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling now. I'm glad that you enjoy my posts and I hope that you'll continue to enjoy them! And comments are always welcome ;)

    2. I could gush about the franchise for pages too. I picked up Fashion Forward on a whim and fell in love. Then I just HAD to get Trendsetters as well. It sucks that we didn't even get a physical release of Styling Star, as I'm one of those people who like having physical copies of things (especially of things they really like).

The only change to the game that I don't quite like so far is no longer earning money when at the beautician's, etc. Like, I get that you're just there to help out, but it's one less reason to *not* work at your boutique full-time, you know? In Fashion Forward, whenever I got bored selling clothes I could just go to Noor's or Arabella's and do other things while still earning money to offset the cost of clothes and to compensate for not being at your boutique.

I also wish they'd made menswear more of a thing like it was in Trendsetters, I love helping out the guys as much as I do the girls.

Other than those nitpicks, I love Styling Star so far and all the new clothes and features! If you're set up on Shopdo, I'd be interested in visiting your boutique. :)

    3. Yeah, I don't even remember what made me try the first game, but the funny thing is, I was convinced that I was going to hate it. Well, uh. You can see where that went lol been in love with the series ever since! Yeah, I prefer having physical copies of things too, mostly because I don't trust technology...anyway, it's a shame that Styling Star didn't get a physical release, but I'm honestly just glad that we got it at all. I was afraid that we wouldn't.

Yeah, that's annoying. Though in that regard I'm more annoyed at the lack of contests or rooms that you can rent out, since those are my big money makers in Trendsetters and Fashion Forward. Ironically, I make the most money in Fashion Forward when I'm not actively playing it. As far as the men's fashion goes, I actually prefer how it's handled in Fashion Forward and Styling Star. I mostly find it kind of boring, so I prefer it being an optional thing instead of something that I'm forced to do (and spend my money on) because my boutique is constantly overrun by men.

My biggest complaint is that they keep mentioning concerts and stuff that you're not actually allowed to go to. Why am I not allowed to go to Alina's first concert? Especially since they made me dress her for it! I put together such a cute outfit for her, I was looking forward to seeing her perform in it :/

Yes, the game has been fantastic so far. So many new quality-of-life functions, the idol stuff, THE NEW CLOTHES *_*

I'm not set up on Shopdo yet, but I'll definitely post about it when I am. Soon! And I'd be interested in visiting yours as well :)

    4. There were a lot of naysayers claiming that we wouldn't get Styling Star, but I know better than to listen to them now. I'm pretty sure we'll continue to get future games. I'm just not pleased with Nintendo of America's utter laziness, is all.

I also miss the fashion contests! And I just realized that the title movie was totally lying to us--Angelique is CLEARLY performing at a fashion show! How cool would it have been if they had actually done that in the game, combining idol performances with fashion shows? Arrgh...

I was also hoping something similar to Caprice Chalet would return in this game, but alas. I didn't think I'd be a fan of interior decoration but boy, it got addicting coming up with new rooms and renting them out. And who can say no to an extra $9000 every day? In Styling Star I'm pretty much depending on Ethan to write me big fat checks once in a while, lol.

I'm pretty pleased with Styling Star's story so far--you actually feel like you're involved, and I like what they did with some customers having their own mini storylines as well. The idol stuff is great. I'm a music lover and always on the lookout for new tunes. I've had Twinkle Fantasia stuck in my head for DAYS. I have a weakness for songs with an ethnic Japanese sound so combined with that catchy melody, it was love at first listen. I think Alina has some of the best and most unique songs out of all the girls, though so far I've only heard Twinkle Fantasia from her. I can't wait to hear her gothic performance.

My comments keeping getting longer and longer, I should probably stop, haha!

    5. It's great that you had faith in the game getting released here. I'm just a pessimistic worrier.

Yeah, the story is surprisingly good! It's actually very cool, being so involved in your customer's lives, helping out with their problems and everything. I wasn't expecting much of anything from the story, so it's been a very pleasant surprise.

Oh, you're in for a treat! I've already heard all of the songs because I'm impatient, and Alina's got the best ones. You should make sure that you listen to the japanese versions of the songs too. The english versions are great, but the japanese ones are even better. Plus they released full versions!

Ahaha, we've both clearly got too much to say.

    6. Glad to hear Alina has some of the best songs! I might have to go change my vote, lol. Now you got me really curious. I've been purposefully avoiding spoiling myself on the songs cuz I'm like that, I guess that means I have to play more until I get there!

The English versions of the songs I've heard so far are pretty good, but you can tell where they had issues translating them. I've heard snippets of the Japanese versions and agree they are superior, the voices just fit the characters better. English Rosie is a little off-putting because of her voice is too mature for her character.

I was surprised when I found out that they were releasing full-length versions of all the idol songs as an album. I'm not sure how popular the game is in Japan, but it's great that it's getting this kind of treatment. If they keep the idol features in the next game, I hope they'll continue releasing the music too! (Johann is a genius, honestly)

Did you also do a double-take when Alina abruptly belted out Japanese during Twinkle Fantasia? I know I did, I wasn't expecting that at all! I guess they couldn't get the song to work right in English.

    7. Who'd your initial vote go to, then? As for the game's popularity, it's definitely waaaaaaay more popular in Japan. I don't think it's considered a niche game there the way it is in the west. That's what I've heard, anyway.

Yeah, Rosie's voice is really unfitting, and I feel like Alina's would actually suit Rosie better. Yolanda's is perfect, though. The english versions of the songs have some issues, but honestly, they're still much, much better than I was expecting. And translating songs is really hard, so I'm willing to forgive some awkward lines here and there.

Yeah, that was certainly a surprise! I wonder what made them decide to keep it in japanese? Could they just not get it to work in english, like you said, or did they have some other reason? Either way, I'm totally okay with it!

I have a feeling they're not gonna keep the idol stuff in the next game, but I'd really love it if they did. Maybe have more idols next time, so that they can cover more styles with the songs. That'd be cool.

    8. I voted for Yolanda at first because personality-wise I liked her best, but Alina and Rosie started to grow on me the more I played, so I ended up liking them all. But Alina gets my vote now!

I do hope they keep some idol elements for the next game. What I'd really like though is for them to strike a better balance in the gameplay department. IMO, Fashion Forward was the best gameplay-wise since there was so much to do and you had more freedom to do it. For this game, it feels like they've stepped backwards. Then again, they did have to switch to a new art style, and probably needed more time and resources implementing all the idol movies and other things, so maybe they had to cut some features to make up for it.

Either way, I'm eager to see what direction they take for the next game.

    9. Ah. Yolanda's actually probably my least favorite of the three. Not that I don't like her, they're all lovely, I just don't find her quiiiiite as charming as the other two. She's the prettiest, though, so I guess it balances out.

Glad to hear that I've converted you ;)

Honestly, I really don't have any big complaints about the game. Earning money is harder, but that just means I can't be as lazy lol and I may still prefer Fashion Forward to this one, but it's too early to tell, really. And yes, definitely looking forward to seeing where they go with the next game! This series has never really disappointed, after all.
